Mindful Motel - A Non-Toxic Way to Stay, Without the Drama

There’s a moment when you walk into a place and everything just……settles.

You don’t know exactly why. Nothing is shouting for your attention. There’s no artificial scent trying to convince you it’s clean. That feeling is what we built Mindful Motel around. Not as an idea. Not as a trend. But as something we needed for our family. We wanted to live a better, cleaner life without it being so serious. We created Mindful Motel - Book here

How It Started (and Why It Matters)

In 2018, we bought a lake house in the Catskills. It was the kind of place you fall for immediately…….quiet, tucked into nature and just a couple of hours outside New York City.

It looked perfect. It wasn’t.

What followed was a slow unraveling. My wife was never sick, her health started to shift in ways we couldn’t quite explain. Nothing obvious at first, just enough to feel off. Then pneumonia. Recovery and then pneumonia again. Constant ear infections. She thought she was going crazy but she did what she knew best and began to research and dig into data.

Eventually, we found mold. Not surface level, easy-to-fix mold, but the kind that makes you rethink everything. We discovered the HOA was corrupt and instead of buying new water filtration containers they bypassed all processes and dumped chlorine into the water. What we assumed was clean, safe water turned out to be far from it.

Once you realize your environment can affect your health like that, something changes permanently. You start questioning everything.

The Shift Most People Don’t See Coming

Before all of this, I never read ingredient labels. If something looked healthy, I assumed it was. If a product smelled “fresh,” I assumed it was clean. I grew up in the eighties whre no one questioned ingredients or anything. That changed quickly.

You start flipping over packaging. You start noticing ingredients like “natural flavors” showing up everywhere, with no real clarity on what that actually means. You realize that a lot of what we’ve been sold as “normal” isn’t necessarily aligned with feeling well. The same goes for candles and cleaning products. That strong, artificial scent we associate with clean is often just synthetic fragrance. Thank goodness we found Fontana and other clean brands.

At some point, clean stopped meaning what it smelled like and started meaning what it actually was. That’s when we began using brands like Branch Basics, products that clean without adding anything unnecessary into the air we breathe.

And once you make that shift, you don’t really go back, instead you try to help the people around you and spread the word.

Why Traveling Started to Feel Complicated

The unexpected part of all this was what it did to how we travel. We’d arrive at beautiful hotels or well-designed Airbnbs, and instead of relaxing, we’d find ourselves noticing everything. The detergent on the sheets. Mold smell, brown water. The products in the bathroom and under the sink.

We started bringing our own essentials just to feel comfortable. Extra bags, extra planning, extra effort all for something that was supposed to be a break. A simple question became impossible to ignore: Why don't places like this already exist?

Building a Different Kind of Stay in the Catskills

Mindful Motel was our answer. A non-toxic Airbnb experience in the Catskills where the details are handled for you - quietly, intentionally, and without making a big deal about it. We chose partners we trust in our own home, not just brands that sound good on paper. We researched amazing bloggers like Embody Wellness or the Branch Basics team.

The beds are made with organic materials from Avocado Mattress, so sleep feels as good as it should. The air is continuously filtered using Alen Air systems, what surprised me is my allergies got so much better. Drinking water is purified through AquaTru, the toxins we found testing our water was insane even down to having prescription medication. Even your morning coffee is sourced from Purity Coffee, as no one wants mold/pesticides in their coffee?

We looked in every cupboard and we realized one place we forget to think about, our mouths/skin. We found companies like Boka & Active Repair

None of this is over-explained when you’re there. You just feel the difference.

A Healthier Airbnb Experience, Without the Pressure

There’s a version of “clean living” that feels rigid. All rules, no flexibility. It can feel like you either do everything perfectly or not at all. That’s not how we live, and it’s not what Mindful Motel is about.

We believe you can make better choices without making life harder. You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight. You don’t need to stress over every label or every decision. Not a detox. Not a program. Just a place where things are… better. We want to support local companies like Sullivan Public and local artists like Rowan Willigan‍ ‍

Why More People Are Searching for Non-Toxic Airbnbs

There’s a reason terms like non-toxic Airbnb, healthy vacation rental, and clean living stays in the Catskills are growing. People are starting to connect how they feel with where they are.

Most traditional hotels and short-term rentals don’t think about air quality, water filtration, or the chemicals used in everyday cleaning. It’s not intentional it’s just not part of the standard model. We fought with a cleaning company as they refused to use clean products, our response - start our own cleaning company using Branch Basics.

Especially in a place like the Catskills, where the entire point of being there is to reconnect with nature, slow down, and feel better not bring hidden stressors with you.

A Place to Reset in the Lower Catskills

Mindful Motel has a gorgeous property called Parkside Den in one of the most naturally calming regions in New York close enough to the city to get to easily, but far enough to actually disconnect. It’s designed to feel like a retreat without calling itself one. You just get to experience what it feels like when things are done differently.

Mindful Motel is a different kind of Short Term Rental in the Catskills. One designed around how you actually want to feel when you’re away.
